Minecraft on Rift Mostly Avoids the Usual First-Person VR Mistakes

You can’t directly damage them with weapon attacks but you can use traps to get rid of somebody. They don’t actually die, but if an NPC is reduced to zero hit points they fall unconscious. They do gradually heal over time and eventually they will regain consciousness. You can heal them to recover hit points more quickly, or you can take their unconscious body and drop them off in some far away desolate location.

Over the past few weeks I’ve spent a frankly irresponsible amount of time on my 3DS, a great deal of it with A Link Between Worlds . But when I wasn’t busy rescuing princesses from other princesses (or, uh, doing actual work for the site) I was delving into Bravely Default . Not just the full game, but the demo. Most of us have, at one point or another, obsessively played a demo for a game that had us hyped, but what may surprise you is that I’ve sunk over 10 hours into a single playthrough of this one. Any way you slice it, that’s a lot of content for free software. Well, I say “any way,” but it comes pre-sliced, vertically.

Yes, you could say that. This is a free building game but it is story driven, and what is built drives the progression of the story which we feel is one of the more interesting aspects of the game. As you build up your town it attracts more NPCs, but it also attracts monsters that will come to attack your town and try to destroy it. There is an ending to the story and there are major events at certain points in the story but these can be reached at any pace the player chooses. The player can only focus on completing the story and rush through the game or they can complete the story at a leisurely pace and spent a lot of time building what they want to and exploring the world. Dragon Quest Builders was designed to be played in whatever style someone chooses to.

The episode doesn’t stop there, because once you’ve returned from either of those two paths, you head off as a group with whichever other character you picked up in the first episode (Lukas for me) to find the last member of the Order of the Stone, Soren the Architect. This path also follows a relatively fast-paced action sequence, but falls a little short with its sub-par cliffhanger. It’s only episode two, but the weird events surrounding the Order of the Stone and exactly what they’re going to do to stop this crazy Wither Storm seems as though it will never be resolved.

They were the icons of an era when gaming exclusives drew lines in the sands and led to some of the fiercest playground battles over system loyalty the industry would ever see. Sonic/Sega fans would push and say “Sonic games are faster, and therefore better. Plus, we’ve got blood in Mortal Kombat.” The Mario/Nintendo loyalist would throw sand in their foe’s eyes and retort, “oh yeah? Well Mario’s about the adventure, and so is Final Fantasy.” It was a time when you usually owned only one system, and you owned it because you would only get certain games. It was…well kind of a glorious age.

Certainly, this lends itself to some games better than others. It won’t work with any sort of scripted, linear action game, but it’s not much trouble to take a chunk of an RPG or Sandbox world, string together a bare-bones quest line, and set players loose. This allows for demos of the caliber you see with emergent games, where it’s much easier to take a chunk of gameplay and give it away – Civ V’s Demo let you play with a few civilizations on small maps, for instance, while Killer Instinct gives players one free character as a taste. I’m all for anything that allows single-player, structured games to be more competitive, especially when it provides a workable alternative to awful early-access crap.

The Classic Control is what you’d normally put up with in a standard FPS, where head movement moves the view and body orientation is controlled smoothly by the right stick or mouse. This is the heart of the VR FPS problem, because while moving forward, back, and strafing isn’t much of an issue, turning the view without moving your body is when bad things start to happen at the base of your lizard brain. Even in a blocky Minecraft 25W02A Snapshot world the sense of Real is too strong, and while you know you’re playing a game the part that keeps things like your heart pumping and lungs breathing without conscious thought hasn’t the slightest idea what’s wrong. The trick is to break the idea of Real, and this is where the special VR Control mode comes into play.

While that could serve as the intro to any number of creepy fan fiction tales, my thoughts were much more earnest, yet still slightly troubling. Specifically, they were about how the blue hedgehog and vertically gifted plumber were real oddballs as far as company mascots go, in that they weren’t really dreamed up by a PR team or advertising firm, but rather by the products themselves.
