E3 2019: Best Horror Games of the Show
If we wanted to, we could litter this whole list with sports games. But we won’t do that to you, because these things hardly count as “real” games. Instead, they’re more so DLC for their previous version with few splashes of polish added in for good measure. Oh and that’s not even mentioning their real purpose which is to be gambling machines cleverly devised to eat your credit c
These games are so terrible – they’re the video game equivalent of fake news. Sure they have the glam, the money and certainly the marketing to make this franchise seem good, but in reality, it’s the poor man’s Witcher. Most of the game in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is spent boring yourself to death, whether that be trailing someone for the hundredth time or taking on a series of poorly developed enemies that often bug
On the other end of that are games that dropped the morality system entirely, one example being Fallout 4. Ditching the Karma system wasn’t a popular decision, but it did make players consider why they did what they did, rather than just making binary choices to fit the mold of a hero or villain. That’s not an easy thing to accomplish, and unrooting players from a mechanic they’ve used for the better part of a decade is commendable, even if there’s a notable shift in how well that change works. Morality in the game is by no means perfect, there were pointless decisions in Fallout 4 , and players were forced to play the hero in most situations, but it did make the smaller-scale decisions worthy of reflect
After the success of P.T. inspired psychological thriller Layers of Fear in 2016, horror game extraordinaire Bloober Team followed it up with the cyberpunk-themed psychological thriller, Observer for PC, PS4, Xbox One , and Nintendo Switch earlier this year. It’s next game, Observer: System Redux is effectively a next-generation port, taking the original game and updating it with enhanced visuals and gameplay, as well as brand new story content . It’s that good and you can tell that Obsidian and show creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker put every bit of their hearts into it. Maybe the humor can be crude, but why on God’s good earth would you pick this up if you didn’t expect that. There’s not much more to say except go play it and have the time of your l
That doesn’t mean that horns can’t sprout from a player’s head if they become evil, but it shouldn’t be one of two options. Instead, maybe beggars or peasants will help them in a village scuffle if they play a sort of Robin Hood archetype. There are plenty of different places it could go, and watching a character evolve with the world around them, with various aspects changing as the player makes decisions, would be an interesting twist on the Fable formula fans already know and l
Although its current window of release is unknown, Techland’s Dying Light 2 is one of the bigger games known about so far. It was delayed from its spring 2020 window, instead likely releasing sometime this fall. And when it does, it has been confirmed to be a cross-gen release on PS5 and Xbox Series
Supermassive Games debuted on the horror scene in a big way with the hit PS4 exclusive Until Dawn . Despite frequent delays and originating as a PlayStation Move-only game, Until Dawn defied expectations in 2016 and anchor remains one of the most highly-regarded horror games of recent years. Supermassive has continued to release horror titles since its success with Until Dawn , but none have quite had the scope as The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Med
When Microsoft purchased Rare in 2002, expectations were high for the studio to continue its award-winning work on Xbox. Unfortunately, Rare has largely failed to live up to fan expectations since the Microsoft acquisition, failing to truly capitalize on the popularity of its beloved IP like Banjo-Kazooie . There hasn’t been a new Banjo-Kazooie game since 2008’s Nuts & Bolts , so platforming fans are hungry for a proper new entry in the series, especially after the titular duo were added to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster as DLC fighte

After ongoing issues with funding, Scorn is back and in development for Xbox Series X and PC. Set in a nightmarish universe, Ebb Software has designed the game around the idea of players being thrown into an unsettling environment that makes them question what they see. Each location contains its own theme, and players will need to acquire skills, unlock weapons, and complete puzzles to make it out al
